La Paz to Copacabana
The Bus from La Paz to Copacabana is a quick 4 hour trip through some farmland with some beautiful views of the world famous lake Titicaca, birthplace of the Incas.
Buses to Copacabana leave La Paz throughout the day. You can leave around 7 am or in the afternoon around 1 pm. The bus will cost around 30 – 50 Bs.
Once you pass El Alto you will see the vast expanse of farmland before you get the first glimpse of Lake Titicaca on your left hand side.
“Once you pass El Alto you will see the vast expanse of farmland before you get the first glimpse of Lake Titicaca on your left hand side.”
When you get closer to the lake you will come to San Pablo De Tiquina where you have to make a small water crossing. You will have to get out of the bus and board a passenger boat. On the other side you will have to wait until the bus drives onto a barge and is taken across the strait. Then you can get back on the bus and carry on to the hermosa Copacabana.
La Paz Terminal
The terminal is fairly central.
If you are arriving in La Paz there are some Minivans and a bus which pass the terminal towards Plaza San Francisco. Or if you walk down the hill from the terminal you will see a main road with lots of Minivans to many different suburbs. If you are going towards the plaza you need to cross the road and catch a van in that direction. Taxis can cost about 10 Bs per person to the city centre.
As most buses arrive in the early morning it is probably safest to take a taxi to your accommodation as the streets are quite empty at this time.
To get to the terminal you can get a Minivan that says “Terminal” in the windscreen or ask a Minivan if it goes near the terminal, “Por la terminal?”.
The buses come and go from the main Plaza. From there it’s a short walk to the lake shore and to most hostels.
There are many tour operators in Copacabana where you can book a bus to La Paz or on to Peru (see Copacabana – Puno).
