Bus from Oruro to Iquique (Chile)

Oruro to Iquique

Iquique has great weather and is a nice place to relax on the beach or shop duty-free at Mall Zofri. The bus from Oruro to Iquique can take a long time due to long delays at the border.

We went to Iquique for the beach and had a great time. There is plenty to do there and good food. It has a duty-free mall called Mall Zofri where you can find cheap clothes, electronics and toys.

Because there is a border crossing the buses travel by day. The problem is that the border crossing is very, very slow. The driving time is about 6 hours but we waited about 6 or 7 hours at the border both ways.

We arrived in Oruro from Sucre very early and decided to take one of the first buses leaving that morning. It was lucky and if you want to go by bus from Oruro to Iquique then I would definitely recommend it due to the delays at the border. We left at 7:30am and we nearly didn’t make the border crossing before it closed so I would recommend leaving at 6:30am or earlier.

Oruro Terminal

We actually didn’t spend any time in Oruro. We took a bus to Sucre (see Sucre – Oruro) the day we arrived so I can’t tell you how to get to the terminal but of course there are taxis and it is on a busy main road so I think there are minivans to the centre too.

The terminal has plenty of seating and a place to charge cell phones.

Iquique Terminal

We arrived late at night and took a taxi to our hotel.

To book tickets back to Oruro you need to book them in town and not at the terminal.

The terminal is fairly central and there are local buses that pass it.
